The Why?

Young children will benefit significantly from learning experiences that task them to think about real life issues and challenges and translate these learning experiences into persuasive arguments and presentations. Debates and Debate competitions are a powerful way of achieving this, with tremendous benefits for children now, and in the future.

The What?

To this end, we are happy to announce the flag-off of the Schools Debate League TM (SDL) with this first edition holding in Abuja. It is an annual event, and subsequent editions will take place in other cities across Nigeria and will include secondary schools.

The League will have children from both public and private schools in the FCT debating against each other to emerge the Champions of SDL Abuja 2017. The League will commence in early May 2017, and involve debaters from schools across Abuja (private and public) and a series of debate competitions that will culminate in the final event in early June 2017.

Participation in this competition offers many benefits to schools and pupils, including:

1. Free capacity building for your pupils (debaters and audience members) and their teachers on the skills for effective public speaking;

2. Positioning your school as a thought leader in the area of communication skills and life skills that are essential ingredients for successful living;

3. Opportunity to showcase the talent of the pupils;

4. Opportunity for pupils to interact with pupils from other schools and gain valuable experience and exposure that the SDL will provide; and

5. Opportunities for your children to win various prizes and gain valuable resources to support their learning.

The How?

Schools across Abuja were invited to register three pupils in Primary Four (4) to participate. The schools were not required to pay any registration fees unlike is quite common in other competitions.

The Draws for the SDL will ensure that public schools and private schools go head to head with each other. The competition will consist of a number of rounds with the best schools advancing to the grand-finale event where the Champions of SDL Abuja will be crowned.

The schools also received a Training Instrument explaining the expectations that we have of the debaters, and all the debaters and their teachers will receive training in the persuasive presentation methodology that we expect them to adopt. Our methodology is based on time-tested principles of communication and public speaking.

Each debate event will have a panel of independent judges that will assess the children, and decide the winners at each round. Judges will cut across various works of life from the community within Abuja.

Schools and the pupils will receive copies of life skills resources and books for their personal use and for the school libraries. So, in addition to the competition there are also a lot of opportunities for learning and capacity building for the participating schools and their pupils.

The topics that have been selected reflect contemporary socio-economic and political issues in our society and world, ensuring that the competition not only improves their language and communication skills but enhances the children’s social intelligence. We are confident that the lessons that the children will learn through this competition will leave an indelible mark in their lives.
